Eiko by Eiko by Eiko Ishioka6/9/2023 It was Ishioka’s life work to push up against tradition. Ishioka would go on to win the 1993 Academy Award for Best Costume Design (along with multiple other awards) for her incredible costume designs for Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 film adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. She won awards for her work on Mishima (1985) and Madame Butterfly (1988). Once in her own practice, Eiko experimented more and more with surrealism as she moved into designing sets and costumes for film and theater. In 1983, Ishioka left Parco and opened her own design studio. Ishioka later worked as a creative director for the department store Parco, producing iconic posters and television ads that broke with tradition and showed no products. There she revolutionized the poster with her bold use of diverse models and progressive feminist messages that defied tradition. She graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1960 and immediately started working for the largest cosmetic company in Japan, Shiseido. Growing up, her life always fused western and Japanese culture. Eiko Ishioka was a graphic, costume, and set designer.

The children she draws can be seen dancing, wiggling, and moving freely across the page in an expression of happiness. Now whenever she illustrates, music fills the air and finds its way into her art. Each night the family would gather to make music together, with her mom on piano, her dad on guitar, and Vanessa and her sister, Coy, singing the blues, gospel, spirituals, and jazz. Growing up in a musical family, Vanessa’s parents taught her how to sing to help overcome her stuttering. She first learned to express herself as a little girl through song. Vanessa celebrates self-love and acceptance of all cultures through her work, and hopes to inspire young readers to find their own voices. She wants all children to see their unique experiences reflected in the books they read, so they can feel the same sense of empowerment and recognition she experienced as a young reader. As an illustrator, she includes children of all ethnic backgrounds in her stories and artwork. It was a defining moment in her life, and has made her into the artist she is today. When she read Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, it was the first time she saw herself in a children’s book. Vanessa Brantley Newton was born during the Civil Rights movement, and attended school in Newark, NJ.īeing part of a diverse, tight-knit community during such turbulent times, Vanessa learned the importance of acceptance and empowerment in shaping a young person’s life. Fated by Sarah Alderson6/8/2023 'No, nothing's wrong,' he answered quietly. Lucas looked up from the photograph, then glanced over towards the door, realising that he was the only one left in the room. She was a Hunter, though, so what did he expect? And this one had a history that would make anyone unhappy. She looked unhappy, or maybe just pissed off. Her lips were slightly parted, like she'd been sighing just at the moment the lens snapped shut. A strand of hair was caught like a web over one eye and in the corner of the shot he could see her hand, reaching up to brush it away. He could make out the shadows her lashes were making down her cheeks. It showed a girl - dark-haired, blue-eyed - looking straight at the camera. All his attention was focused on the photograph he was holding in his hand. He didn't notice that the others had left the room, or that Tristan was standing by the window watching him. There were a few hushed whispers, a stifled laugh and then the door slammed shut, cutting the noise off like a guillotine. The stillness in the room erupted as chairs scraped the floor. Broken by Nicola Haken6/8/2023 Theodore loves to write and he has self published a couple books. There isn’t a book of her that I have read that I didn’t love. I am a big fan of Nicola Haken’s writing. ***Please note*** This book contains scenes of self harm, mental illness and suicidal ideation which may pose as a trigger, or be uncomfortable for some readers.) Not suitable for readers under 18 years of age due to language and sexual content. Is Theodore strong enough to confront James’ demons? More importantly, is James? James believes nobody deserves the burden of being attached to him. He can’t afford to care for someone who can never reciprocate, not once they find out who he really is. A Little F'd Up by Julie Zeilinger6/8/2023 I learnt a lot about the history of Feminism and the changing patterns within the various waves. I’ll start by saying this is not only a fantastic read for anyone who is new to Feminism, but also wonderful for someone who is familiar with feminist theory. Zeilinger has been named one of the “Eight most influential bloggers under 21” by Women’s Day Magazine and her writing has been published on a number of platforms. Julie Zeilinger is the founder of, a blogging community for young women to express their concerns about gender inequality and to have their voice heard. Once the HSC exams finally came to an end I was back into reading, the first one on my list was Julie Zeilinger’s, “ A Little F’D UP: Why Feminism is Not a Dirty Word”. However, in such a turbulent time with exams and assessments coming from every direction, many books sat on the shelf untouched. Over the course of my last year of high school, I ordered and collected a large amount of feminist theory, from Mary Wollstonecraft’s, ‘ A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792)’, arguably the novel to spark the beginning of the First Wave of Feminism, to Naomi Wolf’s, “ The Beauty Myth”. The dovekeepers book6/7/2023 Revka, a village baker’s wife, watched the horrifically brutal murder of her daughter by Roman soldiers she brings to Masada her young grandsons, rendered mute by what they have witnessed. Yael’s mother died in childbirth, and her father, an expert assassin, never forgave her for that death. Based on this tragic and iconic event, Hoffman’s novel is a spellbinding tale of four extraordinarily bold, resourceful, and sensuous women, each of whom has come to Masada by a different path. According to the ancient historian Josephus, two women and five children survived. In 70 C.E., nine hundred Jews held out for months against armies of Romans on Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert. The Dovekeepers is Alice Hoffman’s most ambitious and mesmerizing novel, a tour de force of imagination and research, set in ancient Israel. |
